OPP Warn of Advanced Payment Scam
19 February 2026
(PETAWAWA, ON) The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating an Advanced Payment scam that was reported on February 14, 2026. An area resident fell victim to a scam while shopping on an online marketplace for used goods. The scammer posted an item for sale and the victim agreed to e-transfer payment before meeting. After the victim was sent to a false address, the “seller” then ceased communication.
How to protect yourself:
- Never agree to pay for something before you receive it. Fraudsters often create false urgency by claiming a popular item has other interested buyers, pressuring you to pay a deposit or upfront fee to secure it. It’s very likely that you won’t receive the item, and the fraudster will vanish with your money. The best option is to exchange both the item and money simultaneously.
- Verify the seller by checking for seller reviews and history. Treat a brand-new profile as suspicious.
- Meet in a busy public space such as the OPP Safe Trade designated parking spaces at the Pembroke OPP Detachment. The Safe Trade parking spots are always available with no appointment necessary. The OPP will not mediate transactions, provide documentation or be a witness to a transaction, however if an officer is requested, one will respond and only intervene if the transaction becomes a criminal matter.
- Bring a trusted friend or family member as a witness
- Conduct transactions during daylight hours
- Do not erase emails, texts or voicemails between yourself and the buyer/seller
